Warlords: Call to Arms is a real-time strategy game that pits two armies against each other across multiple parallel lanes. You do not directly control your troops once they are deployed; instead, you determine the outcome by selecting the right units, timing, and placement.
The campaign features various opposing factions, such as Undead, Orcs, Mountain Trolls, and High Elves, each with unique armies. This variety forces you to adapt your force composition rather than simply repeating the same strategy from start to finish.
The battlefield is divided into several independent lanes. One lane might be completely dominating while the adjacent one is losing ground. Consequently, monitoring the action across the entire map is just as crucial as constantly summoning troops.
Basic units each have distinct roles. Spearmen are quick to deploy and highly mobile; Swordsmen excel in direct combat; and Archers apply pressure from the rear. When combined effectively, these units form a stable offensive line rather than rushing in individually and being quickly defeated.
After each victory, the gold you earn can be used to upgrade stats or unlock new units. Upgrades, such as training speed, armor, swordsmanship, and archery skills, affect your entire army in subsequent battles. These are long-term strategic decisions, as early-game gold is insufficient to develop everything simultaneously.
Your roster of units expands over time to include the King's Guard, Halberdier, Mounted Spearman, Mage, and other troop types. Each choice serves a specific purpose; for instance, Halberdiers are effective against cavalry, while Mages deal heavy damage from a distance but are highly vulnerable if positioned on the front lines.
As you progress deeper into the campaign, opponents introduce new units, causing previously effective formations to lose their edge. Mages can quickly take out low-health units in the rear, while melee troops wielding long-reach weapons or warriors with spinning attacks make it risky to simply stack Swordsmen in a single line. Experimenting with different unit combinations to counter specific factions ensures that every battle feels unique.
During combat, a skill meter gradually fills up, allowing you to trigger a Charge. When activated, a wave of reinforcements floods the entire battlefield simultaneously. This effect is most powerful when your units are well-upgraded. A well-timed Charge can transform a stalemate into an all-out offensive, leaving the enemy with no time to regroup their defenses.
Warlords: Call to Arms is perfect for players who enjoy fast-paced strategy games that still demand keen observation and calculation. Victory doesn't hinge on how fast you can click; instead, it relies on correctly reading the enemy's formation, building a balanced force, and knowing exactly when to unleash your full army to seal the win.
